Description
Centralia's Graffiti Highway 61, In Columbia County Pennsylvania lies the near-ghost town of Centralia. In the Centralia there was a mine fire that was accidentally started over 50 years ago and it still burns underground. Due to the fire underground most of the towns residents have moved out. The Highway that bisected the town has been closed and later rerouted due to the effects of the heat from the fire on the blacktop. The blacktop has reated by undulated, rising and falling and breaking here and there as if an earthquake hit the area. Although there is a risk of the road collapsing or other complications the road has been a major draw for tourists from around the world (including myself of course). In the last few years the highway has drawn graffiti artists wanting to add their touch to this abandoned road causing this section of road to be called the graffiti highway.
